How do we reduce poverty?

In 1964, Lyndon B. Johnson declared "War on Poverty" with Great Society programs, including Head Start, food stamps and job training. Nearly 50 years later, the United States is roughly twice as wealthy, yet one in seven Americans lives in poverty. Kids are doing even worse: one in five children under 18 are in poverty.

What would help more people make ends meet? Tell us what has kept you or someone you know from financial stability (or financial self-sufficiency), and propose a solution. Even if you have no direct experience with poverty, please offer your idea.
