How Does Coal Ash Affect You?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is currently proposing to regulate the dumping of coal ash -- the toxic byproduct of burning coal to produce electricity -- and is considering comments from the public on its draft proposals.

In many states -- at ponds, landfills, and pits where coal ash gets dumped -- a slow seepage of the ash's metals has poisoned water supplies, damaged ecosystems, and jeopardized citizens' health. You can see if coal ash has been disposed of in your area by looking up your ZIP code on our map.

The Center for Public Integrity wants to hear about any experiences you've had with coal ash, and how well informed you are to the various risks it entails. Fill out this form to help us with our reporting on this issue. We'll use your responses to gain a fuller picture of how well state and federal regulators are managing coal ash disposal, and how the dumping of this toxic material might be affecting your community.
