Thoughts on Nelson Mandela and his legacy?
Former South African president Nelson Mandela, 94, is a global figure for social justice. His influence on human rights once sparked a debate in South Florida.
In 1990, mayors of Miami, Miami Beach and metro Dade County refused to honor Mandela during a visit because he expressed solidarity with Fidel Castro, Yasser Arafat and Moammar Gadhafi. In response of the snub, a small group of city’s black leaders began an economic boycott against Miami’s tourism industry, dubbed the “Quiet Riot,” which cost the industry an estimated $50 million and ended in 1993.
