Is It OK To Market Holidays?
We have long accepted the commercialization of holidays such as Christmas and Valentine's Day. "Hallmark holidays" such as Grandparent's Day (Sept. 8) and Administrative Professionals Day (April 24) have become additional opportunities for companies to market goods and services.
But now Disney has applied for 10 trademark requests with the U.S. Trademark and Patent Office for the phrase "Dia de los Muertos." The holiday is celebrated in Mexico and other Latin American countries, and is gaining in popularity across the U.S. It is an equal part reverent and joyous occasion where deceased family and friends are remembered. The trademark requests are likely connected to an upcoming movie.
