How much is enough for you to live on?
About $23,000 a year for a family of four is what the federal government says is enough to meet most Americans' basic needs. At the time, most families spent about a third of their income on food. So taking food costs times three is how the government arrived at the poverty line. And that's the number used today, adjusted for inflation. Many agree that the formula is inadequate.
