Beyond Our Borders: United and Divided in Kansas City
Beyond Our Borders is an exploration of what unites us and divides our region. We hope to offer a fresh look at the visible and invisible dividing lines among our communities.
From the disparity of our schools, to the emergence of new immigrant populations, to a battle over business opportunities depending on what side of the state line on which you choose to set up shop, our region of Kansas City is built on borders.
Over the coming months KCUR will examine these borders and the communities that surround them. The central question: how do we behave when we create these lines and does this always serve our interests? The goal of KCUR’s longitudinal effort is to bring new perspectives and a wider, more inclusive range of voices and views to a constellation of issues that may be metro Kansas City’s most persistent self-limiting factor.
In what we hope will be an innovative approach to some of the regions vexing challenges and underreported victories, we want to engage citizens to help us better understand what’s going on. We will map the region’s beliefs, behaviors, mores and the language codes used to unite and divide. In addition, we want to pick apart misconceptions, challenge assumptions, and also shine a light on the positive work that’s being done to improve where we live, work, and play.
We want your help at the very beginning of the process as KCUR seeks to turn our traditional approach to news on its head.
We will convene conversations across communities. We will seek to define communities in new ways. With your help, we hope to tell your stories in fresh and compelling ways. We invite you to get involved…so tell us, what metro Kansas City should know about your community.
